Sonja Pruitt-Lord, Interim Vice Provost

The Vice Provost assists the Provost in planning and implementing major academic activities and initiatives at the university. The Vice Provost works with Associate Vice Presidents in Academic Affairs for long-term and day-to-day academic planning while ensuring the university’s mission is carried out. The Vice Provost works closely with the deans, associate deans, chairs, and directors on planning for course offerings and finding the resources needed. The Vice Provost works with the deans to organize and manage the tenured and tenure-track faculty searches and the faculty start-up packages for the new professors. The Vice Provost also works closely with colleagues in other SDSU divisions to help resolve infrastructure and facilities issues, including building projects at different SDSU locations.

About Sonja Pruitt-Lord

Dr. Pruitt-Lord serves as the Interim Vice Provost and Professor in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Louisiana State University. Dr. Pruitt-Lord joined the SDSU faculty in 2006 and has served as the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty in the College of Health and Human Services and Interim Director of the Joint Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorders. 

Dr. Pruitt-Lord’s research focuses on improving methods of assessment and intervention for children from minoritized backgrounds to prevent misdiagnosis of language disorders and reduce health and educational disparities. She and her students aim to equip families, educators, and policy makers with the tools needed to facilitate children’s language and cognitive development. Dr. Pruitt-Lord’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs, and local community agencies. 

Dr. Pruitt-Lord has been recognized for her dedication to service, teaching, and high impact educational experiences with the prestigious California State University Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award, the SDSU Alumni Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions, and more than twenty student-nominated mentoring awards. Dr. Pruitt-Lord is a fellow of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the National Academies of Practice.
